Directors Message:
"The theater is a gym for the soul, the intellect, the imagination, and the emotions. I go to the theater for a workout, to be active with my entire empathetic and perceptual system. I want to be put through my paces" - Anne Bogart- And Then You Act
If I want to achieve anything with this play, it is to have a conversation. Tony Kushner said of his Pulitzer prize winning play "Angels in America" that he loved how every night, a conversation was taking place between the audience, and the actors, and the play. A conversation about topics that are perhaps difficult to discuss under quotidian circumstances.
Magic Realism
The world we have built for our play is one of Magic Realism. We see it as a metaphorical 3am. There is a stillness, a now-ness in the air. There's a feeling that...anything can happen. It seems timeless, but could end at any moment if one person says “alright, I’ve got to go”. It is the car ride during which the real conversation happens. It is the curb side conversation. The doorway, the porch conversation. Liminal time and space that for some reason give you the freedom to let your guard down, to be honest, vulnerable, and above all, present. The world of the play is one of Magic Realism, except that our characters are not the ones the obvious magic happens to. It provides a seemingly ordinary backdrop, upon which extraordinary things like an aurora borealis can happen.
Don't Ignore Reality.
What happens if we don't ignore, or cover up, or try to hide the physical reality of the space we are in? What happens if we choose to celebrate it instead? When children play "the floor is lava" they do not after all ignore the furniture, somehow the imaginative world, and the physical reality which they inhabit can come together in this time of "play". Thus, I invite you to come play with us, and turn the floor into lava, or, turn a 1 meter drop into 40 stories of an office building. The door that was a moment ago, the entrance you walked in, is now the entrance to a roof, or the entrance to the bedroom of a character. I personally find fun in that challenge, and I hope you do too.
This show has been a labour of love for us, and we sincerely hope that you enjoy it.

About:
Original Elevator Pitch:
"I realized, the thing that I’m attracted to in a show/script/etc is life. That sorta, raw, pulse, of being alive. The best way I've heard it is in the music for Once On This Island. In Shakespeare, it’s the vitality IN the lines, when a performer truly lives the text. Whatever means or method or madness, it has to be alive. This made me think a lot about the ending of Angels. One of the last things Prior says is "I bless you: more life" and that stuck with me, that moment where we ran out of the theatre (in reality, to the balcony) to the life outside. When the song Freedom came on. It’s that joy. It’s the flame that Prometheus stole. It’s the formation of synapses in the brain- education. It’s West Side Story. I could list a long time. It's what attracts me to Michelle Hensley’s work, she made greek tragedy relatable to people in prisons who had never seen theatre in thier life. It’s that connection of vitality... something..
it’s mercurial . it’s a quickening. quicksilver.
it’s inspiration. spire - breathe , in breathe, the vitality of that.
enthusiastic. en-theo. engoded.

life, and the struggle for it is how we relate. how we participate"
